Loan Assistance Available for Veterinarians

The Arizona Veterinary Loan Assistance Program (AVLAP) provides loan assistance to veterinarians who commit to work in Arizona for at least four years. Participants must be accepted into the program and enter into an agreement with the Arizona Board of Regents before receiving assistance. Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Award Amount:

The maximum assistance amount is $200,000 or the balance of the veterinarian’s college loans, whichever is less.

How to Qualify:

Applicants must have earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an eligible veterinary college* after Jan. 1, 2023, and meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a current Arizona veterinary license and have satisfactorily passed the licensing examination required pursuant to Title 32, Chapter 21, Article 2.
  • Have veterinary college educational loans that are not and do not become delinquent or in default.
  • Work as a full-time veterinarian in Arizona for four years after obtaining a valid Arizona license and signing the Arizona Board of Regent agreement.
    • For each year the veterinarian satisfies the terms of the agreement, ABOR will pay to the veterinarian one fourth of the award amount.
  • Must work full-time in one of the following practice areas for at least two of the four years:
  • Submit the following required documentation with the application:
    • Transcripts showing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or its equivalent, conferred after Jan. 1, 2023;
    • Arizona veterinary license;
    • Proof of satisfactorily passing the licensing examination required pursuant to Title 32, Chapter 21, Article 2;
    • Federal and private promissory notes; and
    • Balances of all veterinary college federal and private loans.

*A veterinary college means any veterinary college or division of a university or college that offers the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or its equivalent and that conforms to the standards required for accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
