Student Regent Nikhil Dave was appointed to the Arizona Board of Regents by Gov. Doug Ducey on July 17, 2020. He is a member of the Research and Health Sciences Committee, and the Audit Committee.
Dave was born to two immigrant parents in Chandler, Ariz., and attended Horizon Honors High School in Phoenix. He began his time at Arizona State University at the age of 14, studying Alzheimer’s disease in the Biodesign Institute. After coauthoring two publications and presenting his research at several conferences as a high school student, he was named to Arizona’s 18 under 18 and awarded the Flinn Scholarship to continue his education at ASU. There, he studies Neuroscience and Innovation in Society, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in three years and completing his master’s degree during his fourth year at ASU.
Dave has worked in ASU’s Luminosity Lab — a student-driven, interdisciplinary research and development lab — for the past three years, leading nine projects, producing two patents and authoring two pre-print scientific articles. At ASU, he has worked with several corporate and government partners across Arizona, including Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Luke Air Force Base.
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was one of four student leads of a university-wide COVID-19 PPE Response Network initiative, crowdsourcing 3D-printers across the Valley to create and supply over 14,000 units of PPE to Arizona medical clinics in need. Additionally, in just three months, he led the design, development and scientific validation of two patent-pending sterilization systems for N95 respirators during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, he led ASU’s Luminosity Lab team to win the XPRIZE $1M Next-Gen Mask Challenge, an international innovation competition with over 900 teams competing across more than 50 countries. He serves a two-year term as student regent.
